(1) In January 1876, the ''Dubuque Herald'' wrote of the estimated value of the investment four local operators had made in horses, carriages, double sleighs, cutters, buggies, harness, robes, cost of oats, cost of hay and buildings. The figure totaled $129,715. (2)
