LIVERY. A livery looked after the care, feeding and stabling of horses for pay. In addition they were involved in operating omnibusses, hacks and baggage wagons. (1) In January 1876, the Dubuque Herald wrote of the estimated value of the investment four local operators had made in horses, carriages, double sleighs, cutters, buggies, harness, robes, cost of oats, cost of hay and buildings. The figure totaled $129,715. (2)
