HICKSON, Sonia Kopple. (Dubuque, IA, Sept. 7, 1929--Dubuque, IA, Dec. 29, 2014) The daughter of Harry KOPPLE and Goldye (Folkman) Kopple, Sonia graduated from DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL and attended the University of Northern Iowa. She married Thomas L. Hickson on January 9, 1951, in Chicago. He died on May 11, 1974.

Sonia worked most of her life at KOPPLE'S MARKET, the family meat and grocery business located on University and Booth STREETS. In 1974, she became sole owner of the store until she retired in 1994. She was a member of the Iowa Grocers’ Association.

Sonia did volunteer work with the COLTS DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS. When the Colt Cadets formed in 1967, she became the group's first director assisted by members of the “A Corps.” Later, Sonia did major fund-raising for the Colts.

As a board member for the DUBUQUE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, Sonia worked in fund-raising, the annual Fund Drive, the Arena Pops, and the Marketing Committee. In 1996, she was named Volunteer of the Year by the Dubuque Symphony Board.

A past member of the Clarke University Development Council, Sonia was a co-founder of the Clarke Celebrity Golf Classic.
