UP TOWN DRUG STORE
UP TOWN DRUG STORE. In 1858 after the partnership of SAMSON & MOORE was dissolved, Eben Moore became the sole proprietor of the Up Town Drug Store at 172 Main.
Soon after becoming the owner of his own business, Moore developed and began marketing BALL'S CHERRY DROPS. These were claimed to be a safe and reliable remedy for coughs, colds, and bronchitis. The reference Antique Bottles of Iowa stated that this medicine was supplied to Union forces during the CIVIL WAR. Ball's Cherry Drops continued to be manufactured locally by Williard H. TORBERT until 1897.
By 1865 Eben Moore had expanded the business to include the wholesale drugs. He relocated his store to 130 Main. Moore and Torbert joined their businesses together in 1869 to form Moore & Torbert. In 1871 Proctor Samson who had once been Moore's partner joined the firm as a minor partner.
In 1873 Samson purchased Moore's share of the company. Moore remained a minor partner in the firm of Torbert & Samson which relocated to 156 Main. By the end of 1874, both Moore and Samson sold their interests to Torbert who formally established the TORBERT DRUG COMPANY in 1906.
