ROBINSON, Frank M.
ROBINSON, Frank M. (South Reading, Windsor County, VT, 1828--Dubuque, IA, Mar. 25, 1885). Robinson began his education in the academy at West Randolph, Vermont under the principalship of Austin ADAMS, the man he would later join in the practice of law in Dubuque. He entered Dartmouth College in 1851 and graduated in 1855. He began the study of law in the office of Tracy, Converse & Barrett in Woodstock. Tracy at the time was a member of Congress. Converse became the governor of the state and Barrett was later one of the state's justices on the supreme court. He arrived in Dubuque on February 16, 1856, completed his studies, and was admitted to the bar in 1857. (1)
In January 1862, Robinson formed a legal partnership with Austin ADAMS that lasted fourteen years. He was also associated with Benjamin William LACY. Lacy also married Robinson's daughter. (2)
Robinson was a member for one or two terms on the Dubuque city council. He was active in securing the right-of-way for the widening of Grandview Avenue, improvements for WASHINGTON PARK and JACKSON PARK, and the erection of the TOWN CLOCK. (3) He was a life member of the Library Association. (4)
In addition to his legal practice. Robinson was also a stockholder and director of the CHAMBERLAIN PLOW COMPANY, FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE, and the DUBUQUE COUNTY BANK. (5)
One of the reminders of Frank M. Robinson is the FRANK M. ROBINSON MANSION-1640 MAIN.
