DUBUQUE COUNTY BANK
DUBUQUE COUNTY BANK. The Dubuque County Bank was organized on December 19, 1875 and located at 623 Main Street. Incorporators included Asa HORR, Patrick J. QUIGLEY, and William G. STEWART. (1) Its officers included William G. Stewart, president; and A. Limback, vice-president.
In 1890 the election of Edward F. Duncan to the position of cashier was the subject of an article in The Herald. The editorial mentioned that the bank had previously not lived up to its potential because several of the largest stockholders had also held interest in other banks with whom they chose for most of their business. It was felt that Duncan would do a better job in championing the bank's interests. (2)
The election of Duncan proved wise, since by November the business carried by the Dubuque County Bank had more than doubled. Despite the improvement, the bank was forced to move since the building in which it was located was sold. SECOND NATIONAL BANK, the purchaser, chose to relocate and sell its former building. Officials of Dubuque County Bank also thought it wise to relocate so that all the banks in Dubuque were not located in roughly the same area. The building chosen was owned by Augustin A. COOPER. The corner which he used as an office was refurbished by Cooper with a new glass window and a lease by him to the property was signed by officials of Dubuque County Bank. Business was resumed on January 1, 1891. (3)
By 1891 the bank's former headquarters was occupied by the Rockford Clothing Company. (4)
On April 4, 1906 the announcement was made that Dubuque County Bank was closing its business. (5)
