MCCRANEY, Bessie V.
MCCRANEY, Bessie V. (Dubuque, IA--Dubuque, IA, Aug. 7, 1979). In 1967 Miss McCraney retired after fifty-two years with the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT where she had served as a director/principal at LINCOLN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL and AUDUBON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. After completing high school in 1917, she attended the UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE. She passed the state teacher's exam and was hired for $25 per month as an assistant for the kindergarten teacher at Lincoln School. (1) In 1946 she was teaching kindergarten at Franklin Elementary School. (2) She later finished post-graduate work at Northwestern University and retired from IRVING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. (3)
McCraney was a person with a long family history in Dubuque. Her great-great aunt, Susan Ann MCCRANEY was the first white child born in Iowa. Her grandfathers were Thomas MCCRANEY and Solon LANGWORTHY. (4)
