MCCRANEY, Susan Ann. (Dubuque, IA, Jan. 10, 1833--1894). First white child born in Dubuque and perhaps in all of Iowa. The daughter of Tom McCraney, a local LEAD miner, Susan Ann was nearly born outside of Iowa. Her father along with many other miners had been evicted from Iowa weeks earlier because the land was still Indian country. Huddling in the cold on an island in the MISSISSIPPI RIVER, Tom McCraney decided his family needed the shelter of the cabin he had built near the mines. Fortunately the McCraney cabin had been left by soldiers who destroyed the other cabins to discourage the miners from reentering Iowa illegally.
