CATHOLIC TRIBUNE (THE). The first English language Catholic weekly published by the CATHOLIC PRINTING COMPANY. With the motto: "For Truth, Liberty and Right---For Christian Citizenship in the United States," the Catholic Tribune was first published in 1899 following the success of the KATHOLISCHER WESTEN and the IOWA.

The Tribune followed the same format of the other papers in limiting itself to twelve pages. By 1912, its circulation had grown to 30,000.

The 1899-1900 Dubuque City Directory listed 291 6th.

The 1911-12 Dubuque City Directory and the 1916-1917 White's Dubuque County Directory listed 295 6th.

Throughout its existence, the Tribune went through a series of publication changes. The semi-weekly version was founded on November 7, 1915, but was discontinued in 1919 when a tri-weekly schedule of publication on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday began. This publication, with the motto "Make The United States Safe For Christian Democracy," was discontinued in 1920 when a weekly publication format was begun.
