WALTON, Sandra. (Sherrill, IA- ). Walton began teaching at DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL in 1974 and became a physics teachers in 1978. (1) In 1987 Walton was selected by the Iowa Academy of Science as one of three teachers considered to receive the PRESIDENTIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHING from Iowa. (2) The National Science Foundation which manages the presidential awards program, formed a selection committee of scientists, mathematicians, and math and science educators, chose a math and science teacher from each state. The science award, for which she was the winner, was presented with a five thousand dollar grant to her school at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., held on November 16-20, 1987. (3)

Walton used the grant, which had to be spent in two years, to fund the Grade School Physics Olympics in 1987 and 1988. Monies were also used to purchase equipment for DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL.

Walton had been a recipient of several fellowships to study with national physics foundations. She attended an International Conference for Physics Teachers in Japan in 1986.
