WALTON, Sandra
WALTON, Sandra. (Sherrill, IA- ). Walton began teaching at DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL in 1974 and became a physics teacher in 1978. (1) In 1986 Walton was one of one hundred physics teachers in the United States selected to become Physics Teaching Resource Agents. The program, designed by the American Association of Physics Teachers, was funded by the National Science Foundation to address the critical shortage of physics teachers. (2)
In 1987 Walton was selected by the Iowa Academy of Science as one of three teachers considered to receive the PRESIDENTIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHING from Iowa. (3) The National Science Foundation which manages the presidential awards program, formed a selection committee of scientists, mathematicians, and math and science educators, chose a math and science teacher from each state. The science award, for which she was the winner, was presented with a five thousand dollar grant to her school at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., held on November 16-20, 1987. (4) Walton used the grant, which had to be spent in two years, to fund the Grade School Physics Olympics in 1987 and 1988. Monies were also used to purchase equipment for Senior. She also received one of three Medical Associates Clinic PC 1988 Science and Math Scholarship Awards presented to outstanding science or math teachers in the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT who want to continue their education in their specific fields. (5)
Walton had been a recipient of several fellowships to study with national physics foundations. She attended an International Conference for Physics Teachers in Japan in 1986.
In 1996 she coached the physics team from Senior to the regional championship. (6)
