RYDER, John. (Dubuque, IA--Dubuque, IA, Mar. 9, 1940 ). Ryder was educated in the parochial schools of Dubuque. He graduated from the BAYLESS BUSINESS COLLEGE and for twenty-five years was the junior member of the RYDER BROS. WHOLESALE GROCERS. In 1919, he organized the RYDER REALTY COMPANY and served as vice president until January, 1925, when he retired from the firm. (1)

He served more than fifteen years as State Chief Ranger of the CATHOLIC ORDER OF FORESTERS. In March, 1925, he was elected member of the board of education of the city of Dubuque and was appointed chairman of the finance committee. He was also for many years a director of the Hotel Julien Dubuque. (2)

Ryder was elected to the general assembly November, 1924, and was re-elected continuously until 1938. In 1930 he spent $19 operating his primary election. (3) In 1937, he requested to be brought from Dubuque, where he was in poor health, to Des Moines and taken into the Iowa House to cast the vote that elected LaMarr Foster the speaker. (4)
