RYDER, John
RYDER, John. (Dubuque, IA--Dubuque, IA, Mar. 9, 1940 ). Ryder was educated in the parochial schools of Dubuque. He graduated from the BAYLESS BUSINESS COLLEGE and for twenty-five years was the junior member of the RYDER BROS. WHOLESALE GROCERS. In 1919, he organized the RYDER REALTY COMPANY and served as vice president until January, 1925, when he retired from the firm. (1)
Beginning in 1913, Ryder had served more than fifteen years as State Chief Ranger of the CATHOLIC ORDER OF FORESTERS. (2) In March, 1925, he was elected a member of the board of education and was appointed chairman of the finance committee. He was also for many years a director of the HOTEL JULIEN DUBUQUE. (3)
Ryder was elected to the Iowa General Assembly in November, 1924 and was re-elected continuously until 1938. In 1937 he sponsored legislation, widely supported locally, to give police courts the authority to try drunk driving cases. (4) The same year, he requested to be brought from Dubuque, where he was in poor health, to Des Moines into the Iowa House to cast the vote that elected LaMarr Foster the speaker. (5)
