KARATE. Hand-to-hand combat developed by Koreans. David SCHMITT, a fifth degree black belt, opened the first karate school in Dubuque in 1970. Schmitt taught the Tang Soo Do version of karate while Bob Kisting, who operated Dubuque Defensive Arts, taught Tae Kwon Do.
