KARATE

KARATE. A hand-to-hand martial art, karate was developed by Koreans. David SCHMITT, then a fifth degree black belt, opened the first karate school in Dubuque in 1970. Schmitt taught the Tang Soo Do version of karate.

Bob Kisting, a black belt in Tae Kwon Do karate, taught a personal blend of Korean and Chinese martial arts at his school, Dubuque Defensive Arts, at 527 W. Eighth.
