Gilliam came to Dubuque as the president of Frudden Lumber Company and retired at the age of fifty-nine when the company was sold. He lived in Dubuque until 1990 and served served on the boards of [[LINWOOD CEMETERY]] and [[FINLEY HOSPITAL]]. He was a former president of the Iowa Lumberman's Association.
