He was struck out swinging against Satchel Paige who went on to become a famous major league pitcher.

On May 9, 1964, Tom married Dorothy Wubben at [[ST. PATRICK'S CATHOLIC CHURCH]]. He joined the [[SCHLUETER INSURANCE AGENCY]] in 1953 with his father and brother and went on to become vice president of the firm. He was president of the local insurance association and a state representative of that association.
