Upon the death of their father in 1873, Trewin and his brother hitched up a wagon and drove their cattle herd to Fredericksburg, Iowa. He attended the local school and later Upper Iowa University in Fayette and the Epworth Seminary. Upon graduation he taught at several schools before becoming the principal of the Earlville School. (1) Trewin moved to Dubuque in 1885 and studied law. In 1887, he and W.A. Leathers bought the books and data of Taymor Connell and became abstractors. Trewin remained in this business the rest of his life eventually forming C.B. Trewin, Inc. He was also the owner of the Fenelon Place Elevator for forty years.
