HARTIG, David S., Sr. (Dubuque, IA, Dec. 30, 1910-Dubuque, IA, June 6, 1987). President (1964-1972) Hartig Drug Company. In 1932 Hartig joined the company begun by Albert J. HARTIG in 1905. He served as the treasurer, executive vice-president and, eventually, president.
Civic-minded, Hartig served as a director and chairperson of the retail merchants' bureau of the DUBUQUE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Later president of the Chamber, Hartig received its "Man of the Year" Award in 1941. Hartig served as a director of the United Wholesale Druggists of Chicago, a member of the dean's council of Northwestern University's Graduate School of Management, director and president of the Dubuque Rotary Club, and director and president of the YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (Y.M.C.A.)
Hartig was an active supporter of the BOY SCOUTS in Dubuque. The second recipient of the Eagle Scout Award in the Northeast Iowa Council, he later served as president of the Council. He was the recipient of the local Silver Beaver, the North Central Region Silver Antelope and the National Court of Honor Distinguished Eagle Scout awards. Hartig was also presented with the Sertoma Club Award for Significant and Meritorious Service to Mankind.
