HARTIG, David S., Sr.
HARTIG, David S., Sr. (Dubuque, IA, Dec. 30, 1910--Dubuque, IA, June 6, 1987). In 1932 Hartig joined the company begun by Albert J. HARTIG in 1905. He served as the treasurer, executive vice-president and, eventually, president from 1964-1972.
Civic-minded, Hartig served as a director and chairperson of the retail merchants' bureau of the DUBUQUE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Later president of the Chamber, Hartig received its "Man of the Year" Award in 1941. Hartig served as a director of the United Wholesale Druggists of Chicago, a member of the dean's council of Northwestern University's Graduate School of Management, director and president of the Dubuque Rotary Club, and director and president of the YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (Y.M.C.A.)
Hartig, the sixth Eagle Scout in the Dubuque Council and the first to earn the rank when he was younger than 18, was an active supporter of the BOY SCOUTS in Dubuque. (1) He served as president of the Council. He was the recipient of the local Silver Beaver and the North Central Region Silver Antelope (first recipient of the award in the history of the Northeast Iowa Boy Scout Council) awards. In 1976 he served as the national council representative for the Northeast Iowa Council and received the organization's 50-year veteran award. Hartig was also presented with the Sertoma Club Award for Significant and Meritorious Service to Mankind. (2)
In 1979 Hartig was presented with the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. This award was presented to someone who had attained the Eagle Scout rank at least 25 years previously and over those years rendered outstanding service to his fellow man. (3)
