KINTZINGER, Martha Jean. (Bartlesville, OK, Jan. 9, 1926--Dubuque, IA, May 31, 2012) The daughter of Clarence East Bartlett and Vada Ruth Shields Bartlett, both Oklahoma pioneers, Martha eagerly participated in Girl Scouting, camping and musical activities and developed a lifelong love of swimming. These interests led her to Girl Scout adventures and camp counseling jobs as a young woman, and to her college majors of physical education and music/fine arts. She graduated from the Oklahoma College of Women in Chickasha, Okla., in 1947 with a bachelor of fine arts.
During her career as a Girl Scout executive, Martha lived in Boston and directed the summer Girl Scout Camp Treasure Island on Lake Winnepausakee, N.H. She then served as the Girl Scout Executive Director for the Dubuque Girl Scout Council.
Martha married Charles KINTZINGER on April 26, 1952, at the First Congregational Church in Dubuque, and the young couple spent their honeymoon summer at Dubuque's Girl Scout Camp Little Cloud.
As a devoted mother and tireless homemaker, Martha, together with Chuck, raised four children and supported her husband in building his law practice. She inspired her children with her determination and motto "Make it happen!"
Martha was an energetic community volunteer and fundraiser, donating her time to the United Way, VISITING NURSE ASSOCIATION, [[YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (Y.M.C.A.), Sunshine Circle Auxillary, the Girl Scouts and other organizations that found her leadership skills valuable. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, participating in the church bell choir and the STEPHEN MINISTRY. Martha was a 60-year member of the sisterhood of PEO. She served on the PEO State Executive Board and as PEO State President. Martha coined and followed her PEO President's motto: "Come Walk Among the Stars." She encouraged family and friends alike to embrace life and its many changes and decisions, as reflected in her favorite poem "The Road Not Taken," by Robert Frost.
