KRETSCHMER, Herbert C. (Dubuque, IA, Aug. 2, 1866--Dubuque, IA, Sept. 11, 1933). Founder, KRETSCHMER MANUFACTURING COMPANY. Kretschmer was the son of Charles G. KRETSCHMER, principal of the Fifth Ward School. At the age of fifteen, Herbert began working as a plumber's assistant for MORRISON BROTHERS and later found work at the A.Y.MCDONALD MANUFACTURING COMPANY as a shipping boy.
Kretschmer rose in the company to become a salesman. In 1907, however, he formed a partnership with his brother, Frederick N. Kretschmer, to establish their own business, the Kretschmer Manufacturing Company.
