At the time of his death from an automobile accident, he was the publisher and editor of the ''Daily American Tribune'' of Dubuque and the managing editor of a proposed Catholic publication in Milwaukee. Gonner, the son of [[GONNER, Nicholas Sr.|Nicholas GONNER, Sr.]] was named a Knight of St. Gregory in 1912 by Pope Pius X for his efforts in behalf of the Catholic faith. Gonner was a past president of the [[GERMAN ROMAN CATHOLIC CENTRAL ASSOCIATION]], a national organization, and the St. Boniface Fund for Iowa. Gonner was also an active member of the [[ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY]].
