Gonner took over publishing the [[LUXEMBURGER GAZETTE]] and the [[KATHOLISCHER WESTEN]] upon the death of his father. In 1899 he established the ''Catholic Tribune Weekly''. At the time of his death from an automobile accident, he was the publisher and editor of the ''Daily American Tribune'' of Dubuque and the managing editor of a proposed Catholic publication in Milwaukee. Gonner, the son of [[GONNER, Nicholas Sr.|Nicholas GONNER, Sr.]] was named a Knight of St. Gregory in 1912 by Pope Pius X for his efforts in behalf of the Catholic faith. Gonner was a past president of the [[GERMAN ROMAN CATHOLIC CENTRAL ASSOCIATION]], a national organization, and the St. Boniface Fund for Iowa. Gonner was also an active member of the [[ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY]]. (2) He was a director of the [[ROMAN CATHOLIC MUTAL PROTECTIVE SOCIETY OF IOWA]] and a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. (3)
