GONNER, Nicholas E. Sr.
GONNER, Nicholas E. Sr.(Cape Girardeau, MO, July 8, 1870--near South Wayne, WI, Dec. 2, 1922). Nicholas E. Gonner took over publishing the LUXEMBURGER GAZETTE and the KATHOLISCHER WESTEN upon the death of his father. In 1899 he established the Catholic Tribune Weekly. At the time of his death from an automobile accident, he was the publisher and editor of the Daily American Tribune, founded in 1920, of Dubuque and the managing editor of a proposed Catholic publication in Milwaukee. Gonner, the son of Nicholas GONNER, Sr. was named a Knight of St. Gregory in 1912 by Pope Pius X for his efforts in behalf of the Catholic faith. He was one of the principal representatives of the Federation of Catholic Societies and the National Catholic Central Society serving as president of the latter organization for many years. (2) He served several terms as president of the St. Bonifas League of Iowa. Gonner was a past president of the GERMAN ROMAN CATHOLIC CENTRAL ASSOCIATION, a national organization, and the St. Boniface Fund for Iowa. Gonner was also an active member of the ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY. (3) He was a director of the ROMAN CATHOLIC MUTUAL PROTECTIVE SOCIETY OF IOWA and a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society which provided help in furthering the Catholic daily press movement.
