Newburgh came to Dubuque in 1862 and established his house and sign painting business. He gave special attention to decorative painting and frescoing, employed fifteen men and sent his work through eastern Iowa, Chicago and even New York. He was a founding member on December 5, 1874 of Dubuque Lodge No. 9 of the Masonic Order. He was also a member of Chapter and Commandery- the Knights of Pythias, I.O.O.F.,and the A.O.U.W.
