NEWBURGH, J. W. (Tuscarawas Co., OH, Jan 13, 1840--1913). Newburgh attended school in Ohio until the age of sixteen. He traveled then to Detroit and learned his trade in Detroit and Cleveland. In 1862 he arrived in Dubuque and established a house and sign painting business. He gave special attention to decorative painting and fresco, employed fifteen men and sent his work through eastern Iowa, Chicago and even New York. He was responsible for frescoes on the walls of the JULIEN HOUSE. (1)

On December 5, 1874 Newburgh became a founding member of Dubuque Lodge No. 9 of the Masonic Order. He was also a member of Chapter and Commandery, Knights of Pythias, I.O.O.F., and the A.O.U.W. A past president of the Master House Painters and Decorators' Association of Iowa, Newburgh in 1912 was made an honorary president of the association for life. (2)

In September, 1860, he married Miss Elizabeth Brendle, from Galena, Illinois; they had three children.
