ANDREW, William. (Scotland, Nov. 20, 1820-San Francisco, CA, Oct. 10, 1896). Wholesale dealer in heavy and shelf hardware. Andrew came to America in 1842 and to Dubuque in 1846, but left the city for a three-year stay in California.
In 1853 Andrew returned to Dubuque and entered into partnership with Alfred TREDWAY. The men operated a firm known as ANDREW & TREDWAY at 484 and 488 Main Street. This business, later known as A. TREDWAY AND SONS, was advertised as the first hardwood wholesaler west of the MISSISSIPPI RIVER. After twenty-five years, both partners retired from business. Andrew served as a stockholder and director of the COMMERCIAL NATIONAL BANK.
