WOMEN'S RECREATION ASSOCIATION. Organized in 1964 by with 69 women, the Women's Recreation Association by 1967 had a membership of nearly 600. The organization was a non-profit corporation whose purpose was to provide sport instruction and competition to women, 16 years and older and to enter and involve its members in specific activities designed to bring them to an awareness of the needs of their fellow citizens.

Sports instructions included tennis, golf, swimming, archery, fencing and ice skating. Competition was organized for softball, summer and winter volleyball, basketball and tennis. Activities included dinners, tournaments, picnics, and a formal dance. Other features included a domestics class, weight control and exercise class, posture and make-up class and a class in firearms. A monthly newsletter was published to keep members informed.

By 1967 members had participated in Operation We-Care, flood work, Dubuque Summer Festival, the Dubuque County Fair, and a tutoring program for handicapped children.
