WILLOUGHBY, David. (Apr. 26, 1924--March 26, 2015) While a student at the UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE and working part-time with the city recreational program, Willoughby became interested in teaching. He became a teacher in the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT and in 1955 was in his sixth year at LINCOLN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL where he taught arithmetic to fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. He was also in charge of the after-school program for boys which included basketball, baseball, and football. (1)

Willoughby went on to become the first principal at KENNEDY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL and served in the capacity over twenty years. He was later transferred to HOOVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL from which he retired. He was remembered for having every student bring their report card to his office for him to review and personally handing out monthly paychecks to the staff members. (2)

In 2017 Willoughby was honored at Kennedy School with the naming of the Willoughby Multi-Purpose Room. (3)
