WELBES, Janice. (Dubuque, IA, Mar. 20, 1933--Dubuque, IA, June 2, 2008). The daughter of Arthur and Bernice Meyers, Janice graduated from ACADEMY OF THE VISITATION (THE) and CLARKE COLLEGE and received her master's degree in nutrition and education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. She was employed at the MOUNT CARMEL MOTHERHOUSE until she received her masters.
She began her teaching career at DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL and then transferred to STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL in 1969 as the chairperson of the home economics department. After her retirement, she operated Weight Control Systems Inc.
Welbes was a founder of the Women's Recreation Association and served as its president for eight years.
