WEAVER, Gassoway S. (Lancaster, PA, Nov. 15, 1846--Dubuque, IA, June 1, 1918) A contractor who devoted himself principally to the erection of fine residences, Gassoway was a son of Benjamin and Mary Weaver. Benjamin Weaver was a contractor in the eastern states
After graduating from the public schools, Gassoway entered Paradise Academy, which he attended until nineteen years old. Under the instruction of his father, he spent seven years as an apprentice in the carpenter trade and spent four months in Ohio as a journeyman carpenter.
In 1868 he came to Dubuque. He first spent eight years in the employ of B. W. Jones, an early contractor, and then formed a partnership with Mr. S. Alexander. During this two year partnership, he constructed the West Dubuque schoolhouse. The partnership was dissolved around 1894 when he turned his attention to the erection of beautiful private residences including that of Senator Nicholas J. SCHRUP Sr..
