VOSBERG, Donald
VOSBERG, Donald. (Dubuque, IA, Oct. 3, 1919--Tucson, AZ, June 21, 1997). As a student at DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, Vosberg co-captained the 1935 track team that won the State High School Track Championship held at the Drake Relays. He lettered in football, track and field. He was inducted into the school's hall of fame in 1993. (1) In 1940 he became the first Dubuque athlete to play in the Cotton Bowl as a member of the Marquette University football team. Vosberg graduated from Marquette University, where he was a standout end and the 1941 NCAA javelin champion. He was the only athlete to earn six letters from 1937-1941. (2) He played in the College All Star football game against the Chicago Bears at Wrigley Field. (3)
Vosberg went on to play for the New York Giants after being drafted by them in the seventh round in 1941. (4) He played a total of seven games.
Joining the military during WORLD WAR II, he served as a lieutenant in the Navy aboard the USS Quick. (5)
He returned to United States after the war and served as an assistant football coach at the University of Arizona from 1947-51. (6) In Tucson, he was a charter member of the Tucson Conquistadors and aided the community through his membership in the Catholic Youth Organization, Tucson Youth Football and Little League, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club and the Democratic Party. (7)
Living in Dubuque, Vosberg was nicknamed "Huck" or "Huckleberry" for his frequent trips to the sloughs and the MISSISSIPPI RIVER. He carried this name through both his collegiate and professional football careers.
