VOLKERT, Edward C. (Dubuque, IA, June 3, 1863--Dubuque, IA, Nov. 15, 1950). For more than sixty years, hunters, nature lovers, and students visited Volkert who was known as the "sage of Massey Station." Officially involved with conservation work since 1883 with his appointment as caretaker of SHAWONDASEE, Volkert established the Massey Wildlife Station as an affiliate of the National Audubon Society. He further advanced conservation work with his writings of books and articles in periodicals.

Volkert held memberships in the Dubuque County Conservation Society, the Eugene Field Society of Writers, and the National Audubon Society.
