TREMONT HOUSE

TREMONT HOUSE. Advertisements in 1860 claimed a watchman was "up at all hours of the night." In 1873 the site was considered for the construction of an opera house. (1)
Ownership of the hotel became a problem with most proprietors staying only a year. In February 1877, the Dubuque Herald announced that W. W. PYNE had leased the establishment for $100 per month. The Tremont House had 72 rooms above the first floor for rent. (2)
In October 1878 Pyne announced that he was ending his hotel business and would sell the furniture at auction. (3) The building was put up for rent. (4)
Mr. G. Becker made use of the building in 1880 as a site for the manufacture of clothing. He employed eighty workers and sold their production at a store located at 470 Main. (5)
The 1858-1859 through 1878-79 Dubuque City Directory listed it at the corner of 8th and Iowa. Rebman and Crossman were the proprietors.
