STOLTEBEN, Hildegarde. (Dubuque, IA, Feb. 7, 1890--Apr. 29, 1981). Hildegard, granddaughter of William STOLTEBEN, for many years was a teacher at DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. In 1937 as president of the National Association of Journalism Directors, Stolteben attended the convention of the National Education Association. She prepared the program for the meeting of the journalism directors and presided over the meeting. (1) In 1939 Stolteben was a delegate to the National Scholastic Press Association Convention in Chicago where she presented a program entitled "The Student Newspaper and Its Place in Our Educational System." (2)

WORLD WAR II led many in society to help raise money for the war effort and caused changes in educational life in Dubuque. In 1943 as the director of the war bond and stamp drive, Stoltenben led the students of Senior in an attempt to raise enough money to purchase a jeep for the military. (3) In 1945 members of the first semester class in journalism were allowed for the first time in many years to edit the May 10th edition of The News under her direction. (4) She taught journalism and was the debate coach, but her primary subject was English prior to her retirement in 1956. (5)

Stolteben attended the University of Iowa in 1912 and received her master's degree at a time when most women did not attend college. She also helped establish the University of Iowa's Quill and Scroll chapter devoted to activities and service that best served the school's journalism/media program. In this effort, she worked with George Gallup who developed the influential Gallup Poll. (6)
