STIERMAN, Dale. (Canova, SD, Oct. 12, 1929--Dubuque, IA, June 18, 2021. Dale was a member of the newsroom staff of the Telegraph Herald from 1952 to 1992. As recounted in an editorial by Executive Editor Amy GILLIGAN, he worked in the early days with a Graflex Speed Graphic camera which used a flashbulb "the size of a light bulb in your house" that could be used only once. His then state-of-the-art equipment allowed him to take four shots during an entire sports event.

Covering everything from car crashes to community events, Stierman also photographed the famous like Harry Truman and Nikita Khrushchev when the latter visited Iowa in 1959. In his storied career, he bridged the gap from the years of photographers posing their subjects to photojournalists shooting hundreds of frames daily. Without doubt, Stierman's greatest contribution was the scores of photographs he made documenting local history. These remain in the TH photo archives.

Dale attended school in Dubuque and graduated from DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. He went on to honorably serve his country with the U.S. Navy from 1948 until 1952.

Dale married Virginia Kenyon in 1951 in Dubuque. She passed away on May 23, 1967. He married Beverly “Bev” Meyer, on December 13, 1974.
