ST. REGIS PAPER COMPANY
ST REGIS PAPER COMPANY. Established in 1899, began in upper New York State as a single newsprint mill. The original founders had left the company by 1917 when the company was purchased by a group of businessmen from Watertown, New York. Led by Floyd Carlisle from 1917 to 1934, the company survived the GREAT DEPRESSION AND WORLD WAR II.
After the war, St. Regis shifted from a regional operation to a business of national importance. There was a drive to purchase timberlands, establish additional plants, and develop new products. (1)
In June of 1937 space was leased in the Brunswick Industrial Block (3800 Jackson) and machinery was installed. Operations began with seven employees making shipping cases to order for Dubuque industries. Production of folding cartons began in the fall of 1938, and the company changed its name to the Dubuque Container Company.
The acquisition of a folding box company provided the company with a product less bulky than corrugated cases. This increased the sales' radius of the company. In 1940 the purchase of the United Paper Box Company, located on lower Main Street, made the Dubuque Container Company one of the few firms in the Midwest to manufacture shipping cases, set-up boxes, and folding paper boxes.
The 1939 Dubuque City Directory listed the corner of Jackson and E. 32nd.
The 1942 Dubuque Classified Business Directory through 1945 Dubuque City Directory listed the east side of Jackson 1 n of E. 22nd.
The 1948 Dubuque Classified Business Directory listed the Brunswick Industrial Block.
The company was purchased in the 1950s by the GEORGIA-PACIFIC CORPORATION.
