SLEIGHING

SLEIGHING. Sleighing or coasting on Dubuque streets was prohibited in 1905 with the exception of West 14th from Alta Vista to Prairie. The law, however, was not rigidly enforced.

West 14th was considered the "Mecca" for children and sleds with West Third a close second in popularity. A popular activity was placing pieces of cordwood across the road and then covering them with snow. These created "jumps" for those on sleds. Bobsleds to be pulled by a horse were fashioned from two handsleds and a board between them.
