SKYWALK. Dubuque's first skywalk linked the Roshek's store at 7th and Locust STREETS to their second building at 8th and Main (later known as the Nesler Center). Called a "viaduct," the skywalk was constructed in the 1920s and made wide enough to house the store's lamp department.

A plan submitted by the Durrant Group in 1979 estimated the cost at $2 million to link eleven downtown buildings and other municipal parking ramps with skyways, second- and third-floor enclosed sidewalks.

As part of the proposed plan, FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE would be linked to the DUBUQUE BUILDING that would also be linked to the Fischer Arcade. Present skyways in the city include the two-level structure over the alley between Main and Iowa STREETS connecting offices of INTERSTATE POWER COMPANY and the skywalk between the Iowa Street parking ramp and Gallery Court, the former Kreesge Building.
