SKATE COUNTRY. Skate Country opened in 1972 as part of a chain. The 1977 through 1989 Dubuque City Directory listed Highway 20 west.

The 1993 Dubuque City Directory listed 4390 Dodge.

In 1996 it was announced that Slumberland had purchased the building and would be converting it into a furniture store. Owners of Skate Country had leased the building on Dodge, but would own a new one. (1)

The company's relocation to 560 Saratoga Road in Asbury was expected to come to an end in 2021. On May 26th, an announcement was made that Skate Country would be sold to the Tri-State Christian School. If approved by the Asbury Zoning Board of Adjustment, the property with another adjoining would allow a school to operate. Officials of the Tri-State Christian School confirmed plans to use the two parcels for a second campus in Asbury. The new location would become an elementary school.

At the time of its closing Skate Country had been operated since the 1980s by Steve Koopman and his wife, Kerry. The couple had begun working at the company in the 1970s. (2)
