SHERMAN CIRCLE. Organized in 1893 by Rev. Thomas E. Sherman, son of famous General Tecumseh Sherman, the national club's objectives were promoting artistic, philanthropic, and educational activities including contributing funds to numerous civic organizations.

A local chapter was organized around the same time as the national with Mrs. M. J. Hay serving as president. The group had its classes and departments of study and literary work. It also had a purely charitable wing under the direction of the St. Elizabeth Circle which worked to help the destitute. (1)
