Service Stations. Service stations once meant the attendant checked the level of engine oil, filled the gas tank, washed all the windows on the car and, if asked, checked the tire pressure as part of the service. The beginning of self-service meant lower cost gas, but a loss of these services although "Full Service" was still an option. By the end of the 1990s it was a rare sight to see any service station offering full service.
