SEEGER, Ignatz
SEEGER, Ignatz. (Switzerland, Feb. 14, 1807--Dubuque, IA, Oct. 4, 1884). Seeger emigrated to America in December, 1849 and came to Dubuque in May 1851. The following year he entered the brewing business. In 1853 his brewery along South Locust burned down. He rebuilt it, but when completed, the arches were not strong enough, and the building collapsed. After two years, he rebuilt it and carried on the business as the CITY BREWERY (THE) successfully until 1868.
Seeger sold a portion of the ownership in his brewery to the Dubuque Joint Stock Beer Company. This was eventually taken over by Ambrose Greed who operated "Gleed's Brewery" until 1876 when it closed. In 1878 the brewery and its equipment was purchased by John PIER who reopened a brewery on the site.
