SCHWIND, John W. (Dubuque, IA, Mar. 1, 1866--Dubuque, IA, Feb. 9, 1939). Schwind finished his education in the public schools and then attended the BAYLESS BUSINESS COLLEGE. For the next two years, he was a bookkeeper for the WESTERN BREWERY. (1)

In 1884 Jacob Schwind, his father, formed a partnership brewing beer with Mathias TSCHIRGI in their business, the Western Brewery. This business was later turned over the John W. Tschirgi and John W Schwind, sons of the former partners and owners. This ended in 1892 with its merger with the A. Heeb Brewing Company, Glab Brothers, and Schmid Brothers to form the DUBUQUE MALTING COMPANY. (2) With the construction of a new brewing plant at 32nd and Jackson STREETS this business was renamed the DUBUQUE BREWING AND MALTING COMPANY. (3)

Schwind was president of the company when it closed on December 31, 1915. He served as president of the East Dubuque Supply Company, director of the Citizen's Supply Company and in 1916 vice-president of CITIZENS' STATE BANK (THE). In the announcement of his death, Schwind and his associates were credited with bringing BRUNSWICK-BALKE-COLLENDER COMPANY to Dubuque. (4) Schwind was a charter member of the Dubuque lodge of Elks and chaired the building committee responsible for constructing the Elks Club Building. He served as president of the Elks Building Corporation after the completion of the building. He was vice-president of the DUBUQUE REALTY COMPANY and was an organizer and director of the DUBUQUE INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION during the twenty-eight years of its existence. He was a charter member of the FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES. (5)
