SCHMIDT, Judy. (Bloomington, WI-- ). Educated at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where she received her bachelor's and master's degrees, Schmidt received the 2005 Dubuque Teacher of the Year Award at the 18th annual Educator's Recognition Dinner. Her thirty years of teaching English at STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL was in addition to her years of service on the executive board of the DUBUQUE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION in the area of political activity. She organized the Young Democrats and served as its faculty advisor. Her goals for the group were to accomplish several service projects and encourage political awareness. (2)

Other community activities included her participation in the Dubuque Chapter of the Iowa ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) Coalition. (3) Her frequent questions of potential Democratic nominees made her a popular source of opinions for the local media. She and her husband Terry Stewart were considered pillars of the Dubuque County Democratic Party.
