SCHICK, Barbara (Anderson)

SCHICK, Barbara (Anderson). (State College, PA, Nov. 25, 1924--Dubuque, IA, June 29, 2015). The eldest daughter of Dr. Arthur K. and Edith (Huntington) Anderson, Barbara was baptized by her paternal grandfather, the Rev. Abel Anderson on June 21, 1925 and confirmed in the Christian Faith on Palm Sunday, 1938 at Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. She served as Lutheran Student Association delegate to the World Student Christian Federation meeting in Geneva in July, 1946. She married Edwin Adam SCHICK of Eureka, SD at Grace Lutheran Church in State College, PA on July 30, 1948.

Barbara graduated from State College High School, received her B.S. at Penn State University, M.S. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and completed the coursework for a PhD in Nutrition and Biochemistry at Penn State.

Barbara was a college teacher and a registered dietitian. She spent her professional life at St. Olaf, Penn State, Wartburg and CLARKE COLLEGE, Fitzsimmons Army Hospital and the University of Northern Colorado. She taught human nutrition at the University of Jordan in Amman, and English, Home Economics and Basic Science in Bukuru, Nigeria and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Barbara authored "The Stability of Riboflavin in Eggs Subjected to Various Sources of Light," Food Research, 1947 and a chapter in "The Role of Women in Meeting Basic Food-Nutrition Needs and Agricultural Development in the Middle East," 1979.

A member of ST. PETER'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH since 1965, Barbara served as secretary, served on several Parish Committees and chaired the Parish Planning Council from 2002-2006. She was delegate and Secretary to Dubuque Area Congregations United, chaired two global Mission Events at St. Peter, rolled bandages for Global Health Ministries, and knitted bandages, mittens and baby sweaters for Lutheran World Relief. She was active as a volunteer at the ST. MARK COMMUNITY CENTER in Dubuque.
