SARVIS, Tom N.
SARVIS, Tom N. (Delta, IA, Oct. 13 1941--Dubuque, IA, Tom N. Sarvis, Mar. 11, 2019) The son of Lloyd and Elma (Ulin) Sarvis, Tom attended Tri-County Schools in What Cheer, Iowa, and Iowa Weslyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa where he studied mechanical engineering. He moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a small hotel desk clerk before taking a "jack-of-all-trades" job at the Los Angeles Teachers' Credit Union.
In 1966, his credit union career was interrupted by the VIETNAM WAR. Tom returned to Iowa and enlisted in the Army. He served as a medivac helicopter pilot during Tet Offensive, and was deployed until 1967. Tom married Darleen Pankratz, November 1, 1969 in Deep River, Iowa.
After the war, he started as an examiner, and then joined Alcoa Employees Credit Union in Bettendorf. In 1984, he became CEO of DuTRAC COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION]], guiding it for twenty-three years until his retirement in 2007.
He was a volunteer for many organizations, including ST. PETER'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH as a Stephen minister, AARP as a tax aide, S.C.O.R.E. as a small-business adviser, HILLS & DALES CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER as a member of the board of directors, and the Boy Scouts of America as a father and mentor to many.
