ROWENA, SOUTH DAKOTA. In 1888 this community located ten miles from South Falls was growing rapidly. Founded and originally owned by Thomas J. Ryan and George M. Nix of Dubuque, the community was located near large granite quarries and large deposits of red clay from which mineral paint could be made. Mr. Ryan was the superintendent of building.

In 2017 the unincorporated community was remembered as the birthplace of actress Mamie Van Doren.
