ROCK SCHOOL

ROCK SCHOOL. Rock School was located on Cottingham Road. My father, Vernon Cottingham and siblings and his father, Matthew Cottingham and siblings attended this school.
The Rock School was no longer used after about 1930 or 1940. Students were then sent to Dell School for kindergarten through eighth grade. My parents purchased the land and put the large red door in the front so machinery could be stored in it. At one end of the room, the floor was raised a couple inches with a black board all across the wall. The building was taken down in 1975.
In the early 1960s one room rural schools were closed with the creation of the Western Dubuque Community School District and the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT. Wayne Drexler moved from overseeing the country schools to Superintendent of Western Dubuque. Cottingham Road was used as a dividing line between the districts. All families on the road were approached and asked what district they wanted to be in. We chose Dubuque and some of our neighbors farther to the east chose Western Dubuque. The line was drawn to accommodate all. The majority of the farm had to be in the district the family chose.
