PRIDE PARADE
PRIDE PARADE. Held on Saturday, June 27, 2021, the event unlike GAY MARCHES in the past, was Dubuque's first official "Pride Parade." Beginning at the intersection of Fifth and Main STREETS, past the "Solidarity" mural on FIVE FLAGS CIVIC CENTER to the Grand River Center where many participants remained for a festival featuring drag performances. Members of the parade included drag queens, religious groups, community organizations and residents of the community.
Those observing the parade included the George Washington Middle School Gay-Straight Alliance and visitors from Waterloo and Plattville, Wisconsin. Among religious leaders was Dr. Rev. Dr. Lillian DANIEL of FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST who remarked that, "Jesus would stand with the queer community. We're just trying to be faithful."
The event was planned by KEY CITY PRIDE, an organization founded in 2019 by partners Corey Young and Drevonte Morse. Volunteer Genesys Trujillo, leader of the parade committee, stated that diversity and inclusion were goals of the event.
